Dr. Karamjit Koko S. Khanduja, director of Mount Carmel Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship program.

Mount Carmel has a rich heritage of providing high-quality Graduate Medical Education training, and that legacy will continue with the addition of our new Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship program.

Under the direction of Mount Carmel surgeon Dr. Karamjit Koko S. Khanduja and five other experienced teaching faculty, the one-year fellowship will train one resident each year at Columbus, Ohio’s Mount Carmel East Hospital. The program is fully accredited by the ACGME and will supplement six other ACGME-approved residency programs at Mount Carmel Health System.

Mount Carmel East is home to a busy colorectal practice, with high volumes of abdominal, anorectal and endoscopy procedures, laparoscopic and open resections, complex anorecta fistula repair work. A robotic surgery program is underway, and the hospital has offered transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM) since 1990 and was on the forefront of laproscopic colectomies.

In addition to the program’s expert faculty, residents will have the support of a dedicated colorectal nurse practitioner, cancer and genetic navigators, and an enterostomal therapist in their training. Our GI lab is equipped with state-of-the art endoscopy, manometry and endorectal ultrasonography equipment, and our nurses are skilled and trained to perform endoscopy and physiologic testing. Taylor Station Outpatient Surgery Center, across the street from Mount Carmel East hospital is where many of the endoscopy and out patient anorectal surgeries are performed. Residents will spend 4 weeks of their training at sister hospital Mount Carmel West. Mount Carmel West is the system’s major teaching hospital, with six other residency programs. In addition to having many of the same procedures and technologies available at Mount Carmel East, the West campus has a large library and learning center with skilled librarians, technical and support personal. It’s also home to a newly built Clinical Skills & Simulation Center.
