The Department of Surgery faculty has demonstrated excellence in the training of residents at our facility. Currently, the core teaching faculty includes 13 full-time general surgeons and 4 vascular surgeons, as well as thoracic surgeons and colorectal surgeons. A number of medical and surgical subspecialists also contribute to the education of our surgical residents.

  • Specialty: General Surgery, Trauma Surgery
  • Lowell Chambers, MD is a board certified surgeon with the Metropolitan Surgery division and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. His received his medical degree from the University of Kentucky and completed his surgical training at Mount Carmel Health System. Dr. Chambers has extensive trauma experience as a result of his service to our country as a Navy surgeon in Iraq. He has a special interest in trauma and critical care, hepatobiliary surgery, and pancreatic surgery. Dr. Chambers is active in resident education. Dr. Chambers resides in the Westerville area and enjoys spending time with his wife and four children.

Charles R. Holden, M.D.

Associate Program Director - West

  • Specialty: Vascular Surgery
  • Dr. Holden is the Associate Program Director for the Department of Surgery and the current Chairman for the Department of Surgery at Mount Carmel West. He is a graduate of Mount Carmel's surgery residency program and certified by the American Board of General Surgery in both General Surgery and General Vascular Surgery. In addition, Dr. Holden is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is a member of numerous societies for both General Surgery and General Vascular Surgery. Dr. Holden is an active member of the teaching staff and is dedicated to training our medical students from The Ohio State University, Ohio University, Wright State University and Neomed. Outside of the hospital, Dr. Holden enjoys playing golf, traveling, and spending time with his five children.
Steven Reitz, M.D.

Steven Reitz, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Assistant Program Director – East

  • Dr. Reitz is a board certified surgeon with the Metropolitan Surgery division. He received his medical degree from the Medical University of Ohio at Toledo, and completed his surgical residency as Chief Academic Resident at Mount Carmel Health System. He has several publications in peer-reviewed journals. He is a member of the American Medical Association and the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Reitz has special interest in advanced laparoscopic procedures. Dr. Reitz lives in the Blacklick area with his wife and daughter and enjoys traveling and exotic cars.

Lillian Badurina, C-TAGME

Program Administrator

  • Ms. Badurina has been with the Surgery Residency program since 1997. Her expertise and dedication to the program has been endless. From 2013-2018, she was a member of the Executive Committee of the Association of Residency Coordinators in Surgery and past President of the association (2017-2018). As President, she was responsible for the overall coordinating and planning of the annual ARCS meeting held in conjunction with the annual Association of Program Directors in Surgery meeting. Ms. Badurina has presented the last five years at the American College of Surgeons Clinic Congress to medical students who are exploring the pathway to a surgery residency. Lilly is also a member of the Central Ohio Program Administrator (COPA) where she has been invited to present to new coordinators throughout central Ohio. She received her certification as a Certified Training Administrator of Graduate Medical Education (TAGME) in 2009. Ms. Badurina, along with members of Association of Residency Coordinators in Surgery's Executive Committee, recently published an abstract in the Journal of Surgical Education "The Perfect Storm Is on the Horizon!" PMID:2886590. She is also a member of the Association of Residency Administrators in Surgery AdHoc Committee to review ACMGE Communications and proposed ACMGE changes to the new Common Program Requirements. Lilly enjoys spending time with her family and traveling. She is the Administrative Director for a Croatian dance group "Selo of Columbus" that performs songs and dances of Croatia.

Fernando Aguila, MD

  • Specialty: General Surgery
  • Dr. Aguila is fellowship trained in Surgical Critical Care from the College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic Rochester. His surgery training was completed at Mount Carmel General Surgery Residency Program and included other institutions such as the Mayo Clinic Rochester, the University of Florida and the University of Guadalajara. He manages all general surgical conditions and is proficient in both minimally invasive and open techniques. He has a special interest for oncology, endocrine, gastrointestinal and hernia surgery.

Dr. Irina Arp, M.D.

  • Dr. Irina Arp, MD is a board-certified surgeon in the Metropolitan Surgery division. She received her medical degree from The University of Toledo College of Medicine in Toledo, Ohio and completed her surgical training at Mount Carmel Health System in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Arp is a member of the American College of Surgeons. She has special interest in breast surgical oncology and minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Arp is actively involved in ongoing research in the field of breast oncology.

Chazz Dabbs, M.D.

  • Dr. Dabbs received his medical degree from the Northwestern University, and completed his surgical training at Wright State’s Boonshoft School of Medicine, practicing at the city hospitals in the Dayton metropolitan area. In addition of general surgery, his clinical interests include laparoscopic hernia repair, abdominal wall reconstruction, laparoscopic gastrointestinal tract surgery and bariatric surgery.

Victor Dizon, DO

Trauma Director

  • Specialty: Trauma Surgery and Critical Care
  • Dr. Dizon has been associated with Mount Carmel Health System since January 2010 as a trauma surgeon, surgical intensivist and the medical director for Mount Carmel's trauma program. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas, and graduate school at the University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in Houston, Texas. After attending the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth, Texas, Dr. Dizon completed his general surgery residency in Columbus, Ohio at Doctors Hospital. He went on to complete a trauma and surgical critical care fellowship at Grant Medical Center. He is a board member of COTS and an examiner for the written and oral general surgery boards through the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery. As for his personal life, he is married with three little girls and outside of medicine; his interests include family, vacationing, live music, fast cars and college football (except OSU).

Jason Keith, M.D.

  • Jason Keith, MD is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is a board certified surgeon with Metropolitan Surgery division. He received his medical training at the Ohio State University and performed his surgical residency at Mount Carmel Health System. Dr. Keith has a special interest in Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS) Dr. Keith also has special interest and is currently performing robotic-assisted surgical procedures. Dr. Keith is a member of the Ohio State Medical Association and serves on several committees for hospital administration and patient care. Dr. Keith resides in Blacklick with his wife and two children. He enjoys spending time with his family and listening to country music.

  • Marcus R. Miller, M.D. is a board certified surgeon with the Mid-Ohio Surgical Associates division specializing in bariatric and general surgery. An Ohio native, Dr. Miller completed his undergraduate work at The Ohio State University and completed his medical degree at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. His performed his general surgery residency at the Mount Carmel Health System in Columbus, Ohio. Active in the medical community, Dr. Miller is a Fellow with the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery, Ohio State Medical Association, and the Columbus Medical Association. He is also an elected member of Alpha Omega Alpha and serves on multiple hospital committees. Dr. Miller lives in Dublin and enjoys watching Ohio State football, traveling soccer, and spending time with his sons.

Maurice-Pierre Pagé, MD

  • Maurice-Pierre Pagé is a board certified surgeon with Mid-Ohio Surgical Associates division. He received his medical degree at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and completed a residency in general surgery at Mount Carmel Health. Dr. Pagé joined our team in August of 2013 after completing a fellowship in Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He has presented at national meetings on the topics of obesity surgery, reflux surgery and robotic surgery simulation. Dr. Pagé holds memberships with the American College of Surgeons, the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. Dr. Pagé lives in the Hilliard area with his wife. He is an avid golfer and hiker.

James Sinard, M.D.

  • James M. Sinard, M.D. is a board certified surgeon with Mid-Ohio Surgical Associates division. Dr. Sinard specializes in general and vascular surgery. He earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard University in Cambridge and his medical degree with distinction from the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor. Dr. Sinard completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Michigan Medical Center. A diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners, Dr. Sinard is an active member of the Columbus medical community and serves on the teaching faculty at Mount Carmel Medical Center. He holds membership in the Society of Critical Care Medicine, Columbus Surgical Society, Columbus Vascular Society, Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, and the American Society of General Surgeons. Dr. Sinard has published several papers and has provided lectures on a range of topics, including trauma life support. Dr. Sinard resides in Powell with his wife and their two children. He enjoys gardening and model trains.

Kristine Slam, M.D., F.A.C.S.

  • Dr. Slam is Chair at Mount Carmel East Hospital. Kristine Slam, MD is a board certified surgeon with Metropolitan Surgery division, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons. She received her medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio and completed her surgical training at the University of Toledo. Dr. Slam serves as the Medical Director of Cancer Services at Mount Carmel East Hospital and facilitates the Multidisciplinary Tumor Board at this location. She has published a number of papers in peer-reviewed journals and has given several invited lectures on breast diseases and breast cancer. Dr. Slam is active in the surgical residency program with resident education. She serves as the Chair of the East Department of Surgery and participates on several hospital administrative committees. Dr. Slam lives in Blacklick with her husband and daughter and enjoys traveling and shoes.

  • Jeffrey Turner, MD is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is a board certified surgeon with Metropolitan Surgery division. He received his medical degree from Wright State University, and completed his surgical residency at Mount Carmel. Dr. Turner recently served as Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Mount Carmel East. He serves on several hospital committees involving patient safety and hospital efficiency. He is also active in the trauma program at Mount Carmel West Hospital and is an Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) physician instructor. Dr. Turner lives in Dublin with his wife and two sons. He enjoys spending time with his family and attending his sons’ sporting events.

Dr. Zochowski earned his medical degree at Wright State University School of Medicine where he also completed his residency. Nancy Earls, CNP

  • Nancy received both her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing degrees from The Ohio State University. She is board-certified by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. Her background is in surgical and neuro ICU nursing. Nancy works with the Chief Surgical Residents and the Clinic Surgery Service at Mount Carmel West helping to manage surgical patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Gerri Hempfling, CNP

  • Gerri received her Registered Nurse Diploma from St. Vincent Medical Center School of Nursing in 1984 and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from The Ohio State University in 2009. She continued her education and received her Master of Science in Nursing, Acute Care Nurse Practitioner degree from Wright State University in 2011. Gerri's nursing experience includes ICU, cath lab, open heart, flight nurse and trauma. Gerri previously served as a Critical Care Nurse Clinician. She also has management experience as a clinical manager of a Cardiac Cath Lab, CVIVU and CVSD. Gerri has also worked as a Trauma Manager and a Trauma Nurse Practitioner since 2012.

Krista Thatcher, CNP

  • Krista received both her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing degrees from Mount Carmel College of Nursing. She has experience in cardiothoracic, surgical, trauma, medical and cardiac intensive care. She began her career as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in August 2017 with trauma services at Mount Carmel West.
