Transitional Year

The Transitional Year Residency Program at Mount Carmel is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and offers four positions.

Transitional Year Residents

The program has a strong history of training residents prior to entry into specialty training in many areas, such as radiology, anesthesiology, ophthalmology, dermatology, neurology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, internal medicine, and military medicine. For those residents who are undecided on a choice of specialty, the transitional year residency program provides a broad range of excellent training experiences, including active participation in patient care and teaching conferences and an opportunity for self-study. Transitional Year residents are fully integrated into the teaching program and work closely with categorical residents in internal medicine and surgery. Responsibilities and authority for patient care in the inpatient and outpatient settings are identical to that of their categorical peers.

Transitional Year graduates possess a solid knowledge base and are well-prepared to progress professionally. Many Transitional Year graduates return to Mount Carmel and become members of the teaching faculty or medical staff following completion of specialty training.

Program Scope

Eight months of core medical rotations are required by the ACGME for all Transitional Year residents. These include general internal medicine, critical care, emergency medicine, general surgery and ambulatory. The strength of our program is the four elective rotations that we offer which gives our residents flexibility of schedule. Electives are available in many sub-specialties as enumerated below. Transitional Year residents are regarded as peers on all services and are given responsibility and authority commensurate with their skills and educational goals. There is a strong emphasis of clinical research in our program with the residents being strongly encouraged to take up projects with expectations to present at local, regional and national research meetings and publication in peer-reviewed journals.

Transitional Year residents benefit from the high-quality services and resources provided by the Mount Carmel Health Sciences Library (MCHSL). MCHSL's main library is located on the campus of Mount Carmel West and smaller libraries at each main Mount Carmel campus. MCHSL also provides Transitional Year residents with a designated librarian, specific Library Resource Guide, and tailored research and evidence-based workshops and consultations.
