Welcome from the Program Director

Welcome to the Mount Carmel Transitional Year Residency Program. Our Program has been in existence for over fifty years and has attracted top notch medical students from all corners of the U.S. We are known for a very hands-on, broad based training across major specialties, but also offer our residents four elective rotations which allows them to explore various interests making our Program uniquely resident-centered. Our chosen sub-specialty electives have been very popular with our Alumni and have served to give our residents a leg-up among their peers when they start their chosen residencies after their internships with us.

One of our unique features is our emphasis on clinical research. We have a wealth of clinical material and offer our residents opportunities to develop research protocols and work with their mentors during their year. We help them secure funding for their projects. We also provide excellent back up with a full-time statistician and research nurse as part of our research department. Many of our residents choose to continue their projects after they finish their internship with us and bring their projects to completion. Our residents have published in leading medical journals and have presented their projects in local, regional and national meetings. We have won a best clinical podium presentation award at a national meeting. We work hard to provide this unique experience to our residents which they can carry with them for the rest of their professional careers.

We pride ourselves in offering a collegial, low-stress environment which is very conducive to learning. Our residents are treated similar to any categorical resident in all their rotations. The Program Director meets with the residents once a month as a group which engenders a sense of identity and camaraderie among them. Our residents have formed life-long friendships here. All these characteristics have made us a sought-after Program regionally. I invite you to come and experience for yourself the fruitful and productive year we provide to our residents.

Thank you for your interest in our Program and best wishes for your future.
