Mount Carmel has announced that 38 new residents will join the Mount Carmel Graduate Medical Education program later this summer. The announcement came on the heels of Match Day 2017, the date of the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), which is expected to be the largest in U.S. history
The match process is the critical path newly minted physicians take to becoming board-certified. During their fourth year of medical school, senior students apply and interview with academic hospitals to obtain a residency position where they can hone their patient-care skills with increasing levels of independence.
This year’s NRMP is expected to exceed 42,000 applicants to the more than 4,800 residency programs across the country. Mount Carmel celebrated this year’s record-setting Match Day with a reception for current residents and staff.
